Mowing lawns can be a taxing and tiring task, especially during the heat of the summer months. If only there was a genius machine that could do all the hard work for you and leave you to admire the finished product. Enter the automower. An automower, also commonly known as a robotic lawn mower, is an autonomous robot that is designed to cut lawn grass and has been available on the market for almost 20 years since Husqvarna released the first fully solar powered automower in 1992. Since then, other manufacturers such as AL-KO have entered the competitive market as well.
So how does an automower work? Powered by rechargeable batteries, most models of robotic lawn mower require users to set up a border wire around the lawn that defines the area to be mowed. The robots then use the wire to locate the area and boundaries to be trimmed, and can also be simply programmed to locate a recharging dock that is usually plugged into an outdoor power outlet.
An automower is capable of maintaining up to 30,000 m2 (320,00 sq ft) of grass. Even though these machines are best suited for work on fairly flat surfaces, manufacturers say robotic lawn mowers work well on gardens with slopes up to 35 percent (15 to 20 degrees).
