Ariens machines are full of character, something which is synonymous with the story of how close the company came to closing during the Great Depression. Henry Ariens and his three sons - Francis, Leon and Steve - at one point had to close their Brillian based iron works when times became tough. However, through resilience to persist with their vision, the family took a $1,500 loan borrowed against Henry’s life insurance policy and another $1,500 raised by selling stock shares to a family member, the four men could get back to work and achieve their dream.
The American-Wisconsin based company has a long history in developing mowers and snow-throwers, priding itself on producing dependable and durable garden machinery that are of high-quality due to the family name being stamped on each product. It first began back in 1933 with the development of the Ariens Model A Tiller, followed by a campaign conducted to teach landscapers and commercial growers how the new Tiller worked. The following two decades were used to consolidate Ariens as an established manufacturer in the garden maintenance field, and even received a U.S. Army Ordnance Award for crisis manufacturing during World War II.
Ariens launched its first ride-on lawn mower in 1958. Just five years later in 1963, it built and opened a 23,000 square foot manufacturing headquarters in Brillion, Wisconsin, to help ramp up production for a demanding market. Until 1982, the main focus had been on the residential mower market, but the acquisition of Gravely Company allowed for a greater focus on the commercial mower market also.
Their excellent lawn tractor range is built to be tough but easy to operate at the same time. Engineered with commercial-grade cast iron gears and large intake components, these heavy duty machines lead the way for reliability and are often passed down generations for continuous use. Ariens mowers are distinguished by their zero-turn capabilities through left and right wheel drives, allowing users to comfortably mow areas in tight spaces that are close to obstacles.
The popular brand entered the snow blower market in 1960 after answering calls for a two-stage snow thrower for home snow removal. The American brand touts itself as the “King of Snow”, always utilising state-of-the-art technologies to produce the best performing products. This has subsequently led to worldwide distribution in the US, Canada and Europe.
